How The Program Works
The eviCore EAP Stress Management Program is conducted telephonically and is comprised of four sessions. The first three sessions introduce a research based coping mechanism for managing stress. The final session asks for feedback from the customer regarding which coping mechanisms they will use, how they will use them, and when will they use them when facing stressful situations in their lives.
SESSION 1 - BREATHING TECHNIQUES
During the first phone call, the coping mechanism introduced is learning how to relax using deep diaphragmatic breathing. Deep breathing is important before or during stress-producing situations. Relaxation is a skill that can be learned and can improve with practice. Not only will you learn why this is important, but how to properly use this breathing technique. The counselor will help you until you can do it on your own.
SESSION 2 - PHYSICAL ACTIVITY
In the second phone call, the importance of exercise will be introduced and how there are biological changes in the brain that create a feeling of wellbeing. Endorphins trigger a positive feeling in the body, similar to an opiate. For example, the feeling that follows a run or workout is often described as “euphoric.” That feeling, known as a “runner’s high,” can be accompanied by a positive and energizing outlook on life.
SESSION 3 - MANAGING YOUR THOUGHT
On the third call, the EAP counselor will teach you how to identify stressful thoughts and how to redirect them to something positive.
SESSION 4 - THE CHALLENGE
The fourth and final call of the program involves feedback from the customer and the development of an action plan.
